Manu Expedition, 9-day program 9D/8N, Cusco to Cusco
As one of the largest conservation units on earth, this immense 1.5-million-hectare park contains an incredible variety of animal and plant species, including some 850 species of birds and numerous animal species. This World Heritage Site stretches from 200 to 4,100 meters above sea level, and can be reached from Cusco by road (8-hour journey).
Manu is a precious rain forest that has remained as untouched as it is because of its remote location. This means there is a lot of traveling involved in these trips, both by bus and boat. However, in compensation for this, you will find yourself in an unequalled rain forest with its entire flora and fauna in tact.
Itinerary
Day 1 - Cusco-Cloud Forest
Leaving Cusco early in the morning, we begin an 8-hour journey over the Andes by bus, stopping for breakfast at the beautiful colonial village of Paucartambo. Continuing, we climb to the highpoint of the Manu Biosphere at about 4000 m before descending to the cloud forest. In these mysterious surroundings we take a hike to the lek of the incredible cock-of-the-rock, to see the ‘performance’ of the males right under our eyes. We spend our first night in the rustic lodge Posada San Pedro (appr. 1,600 m).
Day 2 - Cloud Forest-Atalaya-Manu River
At daybreak we continue by bus to tropical lowland rainforest. Here at the small village Atalaya at 650 m, we change into a motorized canoe to navigate some 5 hours down the turbulant Alto Madre de Dios River to Boca Manu. You spend the night at Yine Lodge -a small eco-lodge which is part of a project of Pantiacolla with the Yine indians- or camp next to it, depending on availability.
Day 3 - Lake Salvador and Lake Otorongo
Day 3 & 4: On the morning of the third day we turn up the Manu River for a 6-hour ride into the heart of Manu’s Reserved Zone. From this vantage point we will have great views of riverside birds, sunbathing caiman, and the enormous aquatic guinea pig, the capybara. We reach our Camping Huts deep inside Manu in the afternoon. This will be our base for this and the next day. During this time, we will hike through virgin forest and explore one of the most beautiful lakes of the Manu basin, Lake Salvador, by catamaran. There is a chance to see a huge variety of colourful birds, numerous species of monkey and with luck, a family of giant otters. There is another hike in this habitat-rich forest that ends in Lake Otorongo and a 20 meter-high observation platform overlooking the lake. At night we can explore the forest by torchlight or go moonlight caiman-spotting on the lake.
Day 4 - Lake Salvador and Lake Otorongo

Day 5 - Lake Salvador-Macaw Lick
Joining the Madre de Dios River we arrive at Blanquillo, near the claylick for macaws, where we spend the night in the jungle lodge Tambo Blanquillo.
Day 6 - Macaw Lick
At first light we head to the macaw lick to watch the dazzling spectacle of hundreds of parakeets, parrots and macaws eating clay. In the afternoon we visit another one of Manu's beautiful oxbow lakes and visit a 42-meter high canopy tower. Going back up the river we stay again at Yine Lodge, or camp next to it, depending on availability.
Day 7 - Boca Manu-Pantiacolla Lodge
We carry on up the Alto Madre de Dios River for about 5 hours. Here we get great views of the Andes. For the next two nights we stay at the Pantiacolla lodge, right at the foot of the Pantiacolla Mountain Range. The Pantiacolla Lodge is ideally situated at 1,700 feet (550 m) of elevation in high ground forest that overlooks the rushing Upper Madre de Dios River.
Day 8 - Pantiacolla Mountains
Today we hike through a very special rainforest: this is where the Andes and the lowland tropical rainforest meet, providing the visitor with a chance to see a good selection of birds, insects and flora from both zones as well as some endemics. The Pantiacolla Mountain Range, which is the final Andean range in Manu prior to the vast lowland forests, rises gradually more than 3,300 feet (1,000 m) into the clouds behind the lodge.
Day 9 - Atalaya-Cloud forest-Cusco
Back on the boat early in the morning, we head upstream to Atalaya where our bus is waiting to take us back over the Andes to Cusco.

Lodging
Lodging Options
The nights are in our "green" lodges or camping huts. These give you the comfort of a private single, double or triple room, while at the same time keeping your environmental impacts as low as possible by sharing showers and toilets and a limited use of electricity. So, though you will feel the heat, humidity and biting insects, every night you will encounter clean and functional showers and toilets and a very comfortable bed! The following is a short description of each of the lodges we use:
First night: Posada San Pedro is a small eco-lodge with double and triple rooms with comfortable beds and mosquito netting. There are shared hot water showers and toilets and a dining area.
Second night: Yine Lodge is another small eco-lodge with double and triple rooms. This lodge is part of the ecotouristic Yine Project with the Manu’s Yine indians. Since this is a very small lodge, sometimes in the high season (July, August) all lodge facilities of the area are occupied and you spend the night in tents near the Yine Lodge, where you will still be able to use the shower and toilet facilities. If this would happen, we will provide all the camping gear you would need.
Third and fourth night: Our campsite near Lake Salvador consists of little rustic huts (built according to the park’s requirements), raised from the forest floor, with complete beds with mosquito netting. There are shared showers and toilets and there is a dining area.
Fifth night: at Tambo Blanquillo, near the clay lick for macaws. This is a long platform with divisions to make double rooms, there are shared hot water showers and toilets and a dining area.
Sixth night: This night is spent in Yine Lodge, the same as the second night of the tour.
Seventh and eighth night: at Pantiacolla Lodge, a beautiful eco-lodge with double rooms with beds and mosquito nets and shared showers and toilets.
At the beginning of the trip you will receive a set of sheets to be used on all overnights. It has been designed for easy use and by taking one personal set for the whole tour, you will reduce the contaminating use of detergents to a minimum. Blankets are present in your rooms.
Trip Details
Health
Malaria is rare in this area. However, there has been at least one case in the last couple of years of a tourist contracting this disease. Therefore, we dó recommend taking a prophylaxis when going on one of our tours.
The yellow fever situation is about the same. Moreover, yellow fever is almost always lethal. Therefore, it is not only recommended but even required that one receives the yellow fever vaccination at least ten days before entering Manu.
Meals
Our food is not typical Peruvian food, nor typical tourist food. It is food that lasts in the heat and humidity of the tropical rainforest. For breakfasts there are omelettes, scrambled eggs, pancakes etc. The lunches in general consist of cold salads, since it is usually hot at that time of the day. The dinners feature soups (great Peruvian soups!), a main course with meat for the first part of the tour and beans or lentils at the end part (since meat cannot be kept cool forever without electricity) and desserts of fresh fruits or puddings etc. You can also ask for a special diet, such as vegetarian, saltless or anything else that you need or prefer. For drinking we have mineral water as much as you need, plus lemonades, coffee, tea, chocolate and herbal teas. There are places where one can buy beers or soft drinks, but you have to pay for them yourself.
